PLANS FOR BEACH
PATROL BUILDING
"Stone Harbor Borough Council heard a presentation recently on the
conceptual design of Beach Patrol Headquarters. The building would be
located on the site of the existing facility at 95th Street and the
beach. The design calls for a structure with two floors and a crow’s
nest. The first floor would house boats, vehicles, storage, and locker
areas. The second floor is laid out for office areas and a break room.
The building would be used for beach-tag sales. Restroom facilities
would also be redone, with access in the same general area, but further
north to allow for a circular drive drop-off point at the beach
entrance."

EFV WORK & STREET
PAVING
"Starting in mid to late September, South Jersey Gas’ contractor,
Lantier Construction, will visit Avalon again to complete a project that
began in the spring with the installation of the Excess Flow Valves
(EFV’s) that provide safety to a property and neighbor during
emergencies including extreme flooding events. An additional 100
properties will be affected by this project and notification from the
utility to the customer will be provided directly. Final full and half
width street paving for the work that was done in the Spring will begin
likely in late October with all final paving from the Spring, 2019
project to be completed by Thanksgiving Weekend, 2019."

FLOOD ALERT SYSTEM
"In August 2017, Stockton University's Coastal Research Center
placed sensors in flood-prone areas of Avalon and Longport as part of a
study of nuisance flooding. The goal was to collect data that could be
tied to weather information and tide levels for the development of a
better predictive capability, an effort to reduce property damage caused
by flooding. Stockton's Dr. Stewart Farrell and Matthew Suran went
before Avalon Borough Council recently to report on the conclusion of
the study."

TECHIE TURTLES
"Diamondback terrapins have an important role in the salt marsh, and
their fate impacts many aspects of the marsh ecosystem. They are
gray-skinned turtles with highly variable patterns and markings that are
specially adapted to life in the salt marsh. The Wetlands Institute has
worked diligently for nearly 30 years to pioneer conservation methods
that reduce terrapin deaths and help boost numbers of hatchlings so that
terrapins remain a vital part of our coastal ecosystem. The program
promotes the conservation of diamondback terrapins through applied
research, conservation programs, citizen science projects, and
educational programs."
