The Avalon Department of Public Works has announced the following
adjustments to various scheduled pickups for upcoming collection
schedules: Christmas and New Year's weeks - trash and recycling normally
collected on Wednesday will be collected on Thursday, both weeks.

Winter Lecture Series
The Wetlands Institute Winter Lecture Series returns in January. This
series consists of weekly daytime (Lunch and Learn) or monthly evening
(Covered Dish Dinner) presentations occurring onsite at The Wetlands
Institute. Throughout the series, guest presenters from around the state
share presentations and/or programs on a variety of scientific and
cultural topics.

Every year, hundreds of children and their families attend this festive
celebration in Sea Isle City that allows kids to ring-in the New Year
and still get to bed at a reasonable hour. Reservations are required
(limited space availability) and children must be accompanied by an
adult. Dinner and dessert will be provided and families are asked to
bring their own non-alcoholic beverages. The evening will "end with a
bang" at the JFK Boulevard Beach at 8pm with a Fireworks display.

Getting Lit: Ultraviolet Induced Visible Fluorescence in
Saltmarsh Biota

Ultraviolet Induced Visible Fluorescence, or UVIVF is a fairly recent
discovery and still a relatively understudied natural phenomenon that
causes certain creatures to glow under UV light exposure. This
presentation will cover introductory information, what causes it, how it
is of interest to us, and finally, display local salt marsh animals that
exhibit it.

Woodlands Indians. Learn about them , the impact of European

Bowl Sunday. Tickets to the event include beverages, food, raffles,

Irrigation Water Use Rising in Stone Harbor
Tax Collector Deborah Candelore recently presented to Stone Harbor
Borough Council a 10-year history of irrigation water consumption.

Avalon Receives $177,000 NJDOT Grant
The Borough of Avalon is receiving a $177,000 grant from the New Jersey
Department of Transportation. The grant will be used for the Borough's
reconstruction of a portion of 69th Street between Dune Drive and Ocean
Drive.

Steve Harbaugh, a Stone Harbor summer resident, owns a home in Mickleton,
NJ that draws hundreds of visitors every night to view his version of
the Griswold's house from National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation. Steve
asks that people bring toys and fill the motor home with them...all
going to Toys for Tots and Kelly's Kidz.

American Legion Luncheon

The American Legion Post 331 and Sons of American Legion Squadron 331,
Stone Harbor, will honor local World War II and Korean War veterans with
a free luncheon at its annual Pearl Harbor Day event, Saturday, December
14, 2019, 1 - 3 p.m. at the Stephen C. Ludlam Post 331 headquarters,
11617 2nd Avenue. Post 331 will also present its annual Home for the
Holidays travel package awards to selected Coast Guard members stationed
in Cape May.

In the grand tradition of coming home for Christmas, The Museum of Cape
May County will once again celebrate the holiday season by opening its
doors for a holiday open house. Attendees are encouraged to bring their
kids by noon -- that's when Santa will make his annual appearance to
visit with children and share holiday sweets. Visitors will also be able
to take a leisurely stroll throughout the house and enjoy magnificently
decorated rooms as well as the museum's beautiful campus - including a
visit to the 1780 Smith Barn that houses Cape May County's crown jewel:
the 1859 original first-order lighthouse lens that sat atop the Cape May
Lighthouse.
